ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel: plan both steps

Published October 15, 2026 · By ELDT Theory Now

Online permit practice, ELDT theory and vehicle operation address different needs. Keeping them separate on your planning checklist can prevent an incomplete booking or an assumption that one purchase covers everything.

Start with the requirement that applies to you

FMCSA identifies first-time Class A or B applicants, Class B-to-A upgrades, and first-time Passenger, School Bus or HazMat endorsement applicants as covered ELDT paths. Prior credentials and exceptions can matter. Check the official FMCSA ELDT guidance for your circumstances.

Ask what each provider supplies

Theory concerns the applicable knowledge curriculum. Behind-the-wheel range and road involves the applicable practical driving component. A permit practice score, a pre-trip video or a truck rental does not itself establish ELDT completion. Use our behind-the-wheel information page to organize questions about the next part of your plan.

Before choosing a provider, ask which component and licensing path are included, how completion is assessed, what records are submitted and how you can confirm that the records match your identifying information. Check the provider’s current listing through the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

Coordinate the practical arrangements

Confirm the equipment, location, availability and documents required for your visit. If you plan to complete theory and driving through different providers, ask each what it needs from the other. Keep confirmations together and resolve differences before traveling or booking a test vehicle.

For Texas driving and rental inquiries, Get Your CDL Quick in Royse City describes separate applicable ELDT range and road activity. Contact that business directly about eligibility and availability. Read the ELDT Theory Now program overview for our planned online offering. Enrollment is not yet open, so do not assume a course can be purchased today.

Course selection

Choose a theory path that matches your licensing goal

Published October 15, 2026 · By ELDT Theory Now

A course name should match the license or endorsement you actually need. Start by writing down your current credential, the vehicle you intend to operate and the change you are seeking. This simple description gives a provider a more useful starting point than “I need a CDL.”

Use the course outlines to compare scope

Our public course pages describe planned Class A, Class B, B-to-A upgrade, Passenger, School Bus and HazMat theory paths. Review the outline that matches your goal, then ask about anything that appears unclear or overlapping.

Compare more than the price

Ask for the current answers before purchasing. An appealing course title or low advertised price does not tell you whether a particular offering fits your circumstances. Keep your receipt and course information so you can identify the exact purchase if you later need help.

Keep the remaining steps visible

Place permit preparation, theory, any applicable driving component and licensing appointments on separate lines in your plan. Confirm which organization handles each step. Do not assume that an account or purchase on another website transfers here.

Visit our FAQ and contact page for program questions. ELDT Theory Now is currently presenting program information and enrollment is not yet open. Use the published availability status when making plans; theory completion alone does not issue a CDL or guarantee a passing skills-test result.
